“Homer on Military Leadership”

With Dr. Jonathan Shay, M.D., Ph. D.

Introduction by Senator Paul Sarbanes (D-MD)

Thursday, May 4, 20067:15 p.m.

at

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

1779 Massachusetts Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20037

(One block from the Dupont Circle Metro station on the Red Line.)

The Iliad and the Odyssey are as different from one another as King Lear and

The Tempest. Yet one theme, the conduct of leaders toward their “people” ( laos ) unites both epics. Dr. Shay’s two books, Achilles in Vietnam and Odysseus in America, reflect his discovery that these ancient poems can still teach us today about soldiers, veterans, and war itself, and that today’s soldiers and veterans can throw new light on the epics. Homer’s leadership portraits of Achilles, Agamemnon, and Odysseus are vivid, detailed, and highly enlightening. Dr. Shay will describe how Homer’s lessons on leadership have helped his quest to prevent psychological and moral injury in the United States military service.
